WOW Update  - July 11, 2008

The month of June began with the unveiling of the tenant improvements at the ‘Cement Mixer’ and July has started off with a bang!  See more photos of the Cement Mixer online.

The ‘Fourth at the Lake’ was a wonderful opportunity to see a few of the hands-on exhibits that will soon be on the museum floor for everyone to enjoy.  This unique opportunity to learn, first-hand, what ‘stereo’ sound is, or how peripheral vision works, or why color blindness affects the human eye, or what recognizable differences between various bird species can be determined by only its skull, was available to those young and younger at Lodi Lake.  Many people were entertained and we look forward to experiencing this and much more in a controlled environment.  We would like to thank our volunteers and our sponsors who helped to make the 4th of July at the Lake, an American Festival, a wonderful success.  Thank you, Waste Management, Lodi Printing, Wal*Mart, Century Assembly, Lodi Association of Realtors, Northern California Power Agency, Kellogg Garden Products, Lincoln Center, F&M Bank, Evans Cabinet Shop and Bank of Stockton.

Construction Update, by Chris Madill

Speaking of a controlled environment, the museum is currently being furnished with its extensive heating, venting, and air conditioning system (HVAC).  Advanced Mechanical Systems (Stockton) was awarded the task of outfitting the museum with the packaged units and its maze of exposed ducting to cool and heat the building throughout the years.  Along with AMS, EZ Duct (Stockton) and BNC Crane Services (Lodi) have donated materials, tools, and labor to complete the task.

Insulation, provided in part by Arcade Insulation (Stockton) has been placed in the existing, exterior walls and the newly erected steel-stud, interior walls to help keep the building comfortable.  Sheetrock, tape and wall texture is on-going and is scheduled to be complete very soon.  What does this mean?  We are close to finishing!!

July is the final month of construction and many of the interior finishes which give the museum its character will be installed over the next several weeks.  Commercial Specialties (Stockton) will be lining the restroom walls with fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) for a crisp, clean look which provides easy maintenance and installing an acoustical ceiling in the retail space which will set it aside from the exhibit hall.  BDL Painting (Lodi), in association with Sherman-Williams (Lodi), will provide the museum its color palette and paint the interior walls of the museum.  Pinnell’s Flooring (Lodi) and Trevizo Tile and Stone (Lodi) will add the final details to give the museum its polished appearance.  AquaSource (Lodi) has even donated a bottle-less cooler to provide a fresh and great tasting drink of water while you are visiting.

As many of you know, electrical fixtures are on their way and will be hung to light the exhibits and highlight merchandise in the Retail Store.  Royal Wholesale Electric (Lodi) and Consolidated Electrical Distribution (CED) of Lodi will both be contributing the necessary wiring and components to help brighten-up the window display along Sacramento Street.  And, as an update, GRB Plumbing (Lodi) is working closely with the Kohler Company to outfit the restrooms with state-of-the-art facilities to serve its membership and the general public.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our major donors for their generosity over the last several months and for the thousands of dollars of materials, tools, and/or labor to help our dream become a reality.

Please feel free to stop by your Museum during the week to see how far we have come.  Fundraising is ongoing and much is needed before we open those doors.  Let us know how you would like to help.

Wine Bottle Auction at Lucas Winery (This Weekend)

Each year, Lucas Winery produces a special wine for their members. With her years of experience, Heather produces one of the world’s great Sauvignon Blanc (Blanc Fume) wines and you should not miss this opportunity.

One large format Imperial bottle of Sauvignon Blanc will be auctioned on Saturday, July 12th and one Imperial on Sunday July 13th at 2pm here at the winery.  These large bottle formats age gracefully; often better than the smaller bottles.  This is a large 6 liter bottle that holds about 8 bottles of wine, and signed by the winemaker and the grower.

As in past years, phone-in bids at the time of the auction are accepted.  Proceeds from the auction will be given to the World of Wonders!  You can call 209-368-2006 at the time of the auction to place a bid.  Or, visit the winery and bid in person at 18196 N. Davis Road in Lodi.

Exploratorium Exhibits Have Arrived

We are thrilled to announce that the first shipment of our Exploratorium-partnered science exhibits has arrived!  If you attended our 4th of July at the Lake event last week, you were able to experience the first three.

Be sure to keep your eyes on the lookout for these exhibits as we tour them around town.  And soon, you'll be able to see them in their permanent home at the museum.

Best Wishes,

Sally Snyde
