November is #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth and the W

November is #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth and the WOW is celebrating by highlighting the achievements of incredible Native American scientists.

Mary G. Ross (1908-2008) was a Cherokee engineer. In 1942, she became the first Native American engineer and female engineer to work at Lockheed Martin, a defense and aerospace manufacturer. At Lockheed Martin, she was the only woman on her team. She helped develop fighter aircraft before being hired by NASA to help with rocket and missile systems. She is considered one of the “hidden figures” of the space race, thanks to her work on the Apollo Program.

September 15 through October 15 is #HispanicHeritageMonth and the WOW is celebrating by highlighting the achievements of incredible Hispanic and Latinx scientists.

Juan Manuel Guayasamín (born in 1974) is an Ecuadorian biologist and taxonomist. A taxonomist is someone who studies living organisms and classifies them into groups. Guayasamín’s research focuses on glass frogs and biodiversity in the tropical Andes mountains. He is currently the director of the Tandayapa Cloud Forest Station, an organization promoting the conservation and understanding of endangered animals in Ecuador’s cloud forest. Guayasamín has identified a variety of new amphibians and reptiles, including some in the Galápagos islands.

Dr. Susana López Charretón (born in 1957) is a Mexican virologist. A virologist is someone who studies viruses. López Charretón’s research focuses on the rotavirus infection which affects the stomach and intestines. Rotavirus is extremely common in children. López Charretón helped us understand how rotavirus enters the body and how the infection spreads. Her work has led to new diagnostic tests, the identification of new rotavirus strains, and the creation of improved vaccines.

José M. Hernández (born in 1962) is a Mexican-American astronaut and engineer who grew up in Stockton and graduated from Franklin High School. Early in his career, Hernández worked on imaging technology to help with the early detection of breast cancer. He then joined the Johnson Space Center, where he eventually became a NASA astronaut. Since retiring from NASA, he has become a motivational speaker, written a book, and participated in local government. You can learn more about his life in his recent biopic movie: A Million Miles Away.

Dr. Ellen Ochoa (born in 1958) is an American astronaut and engineer. She became the first Latina astronaut in 1993. She completed four trips to space, totaling over 1000 hours in orbit. After serving in multiple leadership roles at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, she became the Space Center’s first Hispanic director (and second female director). Before becoming an astronaut she led a research team that developed optical systems for computers, essentially helping computers “see” and catch quality control errors in manufacturing processes. She also enjoyed playing the flute, even in space!
